Montessori is a uniquely structured educational approach to learning created by Dr. Maria Montessori over an intensive lifetime study of children’s learning patterns. Dr. Montessori was a world-renown
physician and educator, was nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize and wrote numerous articles on education prior to her deathin 1952.
The Montessori method introduces children to the joy of learning at an early age and emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching or reading.
Dr. Montessori believed that children are motivated from within and are forever driven by their natural curiosity for knowledge. With this in mind, Montessori children learn at their own, individual pace and
according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Montessori students build a firm foundation for reading, writing, mathematics and cultural awareness through science and geography.
Research studies show that Montessori students are well prepared academically, socially, and emotionally later in life. In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, Montessori children are ranked
above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking thought-provoking questions, showing enthusiasm for learning, and adapting to new situations.
The Montessori method provides a solid framework in which individual and social disciplines go hand in hand and where learning is an exciting process of discovery; leading to concentration, motivation, self discipline, and a lifelong love of learning.
